Tonight's Severe Weather Outlook

Thunderstorms will continue to be dodged across the northern Plains tonight.

A Severe Thunderstorm Watch has been issued for parts of southeastern South Dakota, northeastern Nebraska, far northwestern Iowa, southwestern Minnesota and parts of western Wisconsin including Sioux Falls, S.D., Butte, Neb. and Eau Claire, Wis.

An area of concern is across the northern Plains, where an area of low pressure will move along a nearly stationary front. This front will separate a very warm and humid air mass from a cooler and drier air mass. With plenty of daytime heat and a few pieces of energy aloft, the atmosphere will be primed for scattered strong and severe storms tonight.

Severe thunderstorms are possible from western South Dakota into Minnesota and Wisconsin, including the Twin Cities and the South Dakota Black Hills. The threat in the Plains will be largely for hail and damaging winds.

Make sure to know the difference between a watch and a warning should they become issued. A “watch” means that conditions are favorable for severe weather to occur and to be on alert for any rapidly changing conditions. A “warning” means that severe weather is imminent, and you should act fast to remain safe.

The best way to remain safe is to stay prepared and informed about your local weather. Have a severe weather kit packed with a battery-operated radio, water, and non-perishable food items should you be without power for long periods of time. Also, check the WeatherBug app frequently for any updates on today's severe weather. Remember, "When Thunder Roars, Go Indoors!"
