Post-Tornado Safety: Protecting Yourself and Others

Tornadoes can be incredibly destructive, striking with little warning while causing extensive damage and loss of life. After a tornado has struck, taking the appropriate safety steps to protect yourself and others from potential hazards is crucial.
The immediate step after a tornado has struck is to check yourself and those around you for injuries. If someone is injured, contact emergency medical services immediately. If you suspect a spinal injury, don’t attempt to move the injured person. Wait for the medical professionals to arrive.
Be aware of any hazards after a tornado. Downed power lines, broken gas lines and other dangerous debris may be present, so be aware and stay away. Similarly, keep your distance from damaged buildings and structures, as they may collapse. Avoid using matches, lighters or any other open flames until you can be sure there isn’t a gas leak.
Wear sturdy footwear, gloves, and long-sleeved shirts and pants to protect yourself from debris and sharp items after a tornado. Additionally, dress in preparation for any remaining weather, as you may be exposed to the elements while cleaning up debris and/or waiting for assistance. While you are cleaning up or waiting, take photos and videos of the damage to your property and personal belongings, which could be important documentation for insurance and disaster assistance claims.
If possible, secure your property to prevent against further damage. Cover broken windows and holes in the roof with plastic sheeting or tarps to keep out rain and wind, and board up broken doors or windows to prevent access from animals or people.
